These images represent the reverse of the consumerists ideal….just the bare architecture that holds up the screen we convince ourselves is ‘real’, with these images I try to express the hollowness of it all.
These spaces are all situated below different areas of entertainment; theatres, cinemas, shopping arcades etc., they are strong and sturdy, they carry the weight of the surface structures with their impressionable facades; the pipes and vents working as their breathing mechanisms.
The pared back emtiness of these spaces work in complete contrast to the spectacle above, emphasising the ‘seemingly’ necessary role play in society, which impoverishes real experience.
These images should encourage contemplation. In a contemporary society where we are bombarded with ‘busy’ imagery and ways of distraction, true reality is lost, and contemplation of any kind is eradicated.
